Now hiring: Door-to-door sellers

Direct marketers say feeling of job insecurity in an uncertain economy is drawing more Americans into the industry.

By Parija B. Kavilanz, CNNMoney.com senior writer
October 30, 2008: 1:34 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Workers losing jobs in the economic downturn may be finding the door open to a new line of work.

Direct sellers, companies that market products directly to consumers, say more people want to join their sales forces.

Connie Tang, president of beauty and skin care products marketer Jafra U.S.A, said recruiting seminars in 22 cities this month have been packed.

"Close to 1,000 people have already joined the Jafra network," she said after a week on the road.

Although Tang wouldn't disclose how many people have signed up with the company this year, she said the number of new consultants year-to-date "is trending above last year." The company currently has about 80,000 consultants in the United States.

About 15 million Americans work in direct marketing, doing such things as going door to door or hosting product "parties," according to the Direct Selling Association (DSA), an industry trade group.

DSA spokeswoman Amy Robinson said industry hiring, which declined 1.3% in 2007 and was weak in the first half of the year, has picked up in recent months - just as the full impact of the financial crisis started to be felt.

"This is what we're hearing from several of our members," she said.

Direct selling has a low start-up costs, typically between $100 to $200 for a starter kit.

According to DSA, the average yearly income from a direct selling job is $2,400, or about $200 a month.

"Direct selling isn't a full-time job," Robinson said. "It gives you extra money to go on vacation, get the refrigerator fixed or buy Christmas gifts. It's about getting some extra money in the pocket."

Jafra's Tang agreed.

"People are losing their full-time jobs and need to get income quickly," she said.

Also, with retailers expected to cut back on seasonal holiday hiring, those who count on a year-end retail job are now looking at direct sales, she said.

But what has surprised her the most was the sizeable turnout she recently had at a college campus in Phoenix.

"I found out that many college students are dropping out and need a job because their parents don't have the disposable income to pay tuition," Tang said.

Then there's Veronica Davis' situation. Davis, 49, is a project manager with Electronic Data Systems in Detroit. She's been with the company for 13 years.

Earlier this year, EDS was acquired by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, Fortune 500). Davis is now uncertain about her job.

"If it came to a point where I had to leave the company, I want to be established doing something I'm interested in," Davis said.

As a part-time Jafra sales associate for a month, she has already earned $500. Davis said she'll use the money to partly pay for extra expenses and invest the rest back into her Jafra business.

Rich Razgaitis, president of direct seller Univera, Inc. (North America), is also on a 14-city road tour to recruit associates to sell the company'ss nutritional supplements.

Razgaitis, whose company already has a salesforce "of tens of thousands," said new recruits this month are up 20% over the same month last year.

"This is a time when people want control over their own financial situation," said Razgaitis, and direct selling provides the opportunity to secure a primary or secondary income at a time when "there's so much uncertainty."

According to Razgaitis, a Univera associate can earn between $300 to $500 a month part-time or up to $5,000 or more full-time.

Direct selling has worked out so well for George Briere after he lost his job in January that the 37-year-old former sales manager from Michigan said "his days of having a full-time job are over."

"I got rid of my alarm clock eight months ago and I'm never going back," he said.

Briere sells Shaklee's line of nutritional products. Shaklee's compensation structure allows Briere to earn 34% commission on his sales volume, an additional 7% performance bonus and $125 bonus for each additional person he recruits into the Shaklee network.

With an initial investment of just under $300 for his starter kit, he earned $600 in his first month and a few thousand dollars in total since then.

But most direct sellers don't offer health and retirement plans. Does that worry Briere, since he's made a full-time commitment to Shaklee?

Not really, he said. "I consider my residual income as a wonderful retirement plan," he said.

Post-Convention Update

2008-08-06 18:35

Sunrider International

I hope all of you had a great time at the Convention! I had a wonderful time meeting many of you, holding the young IBO workshop, and chasing my daughter around the Hall during the general sessions. Here's a quick status update on the products and marketing tools. I know you are all dying to get them!

New Products

Of course everyone wants to know when you can buy the new products. I don't deal directly with this issue, but I do know that it's a rather complex process. It first depends on how well it sold in your country during convention, and the sales volume and recruiting rate in your country. We can't launch new products if there are only a few people there to buy them. We also have to register the product and comply with local regulations. I know that's not the answer you want because you want the products now. Hopefully, you bought enough products at Convention. But, I have better news. The new Oi-Lin® and some of the new product packaging should be phasing in soon over the next few months.

New Marketing Tools/Website

I oversee the writing, editing, look and feel of the marketing tool, but I don't handle the printing or translating so I'm just estimating the time on these "hot" tools we are working on.

Sunrider® Training CD-ROM – we've made some revisions and most countries should be in production soon and have it in the next 3 months or sooner.

Ingredients Brochures – Dr. Chen told me to add more ingredients to the brochures so we are doing that. Some countries may not have this brochure due to government regulations. Estimated time is 1-2 months.

Website – It should be ready in 3-4 months.

We have many other tools in development like a new product catalog, new brochure on being environmentally friendly, and new product flyers. There's lots of exciting changes and we hope you enjoy them.

Grand Convention News

1970-01-01 00:00

Sunrider International

It's July, time for the annual Grand Convention, and this year's event is truly grand in every way. The words "inspirational, motivational, sensational" only begin to describe it. The Convention provides the ultimate chance to learn from Drs. Chen and top business leaders, enjoy the Sunrider lifestyle, and connect with fellow Sunriders. Optimize your life with Sunrider!

Convention Countdown

The Grand Opening & Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony of the Los Angeles Manufacturing Plants is Wednesday, July 23. Drs. Chen and Sunriders everywhere are looking forward to this monumental day! Make sure to see the announcement and slideshow of these state-of-the-art facilities at the Sunrider website.

Everything Under the Sun!

With its ideal weather, great location, and world-famous attractions, Anaheim is the perfect place to combine Sunrider business and pleasure. Many Sunrider events will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center— the largest convention center on the West Coast of the United States. Dramatic, modern, and sophisticated, this California landmark is also a cornerstone in the new 1,100-acre district called the Anaheim Resort, which includes the Disneyland theme parks, richly landscaped pedestrian walkways, and the Anaheim GardenWalk—the new hot spot in Orange County that's described as "an oasis of dining, shopping, and entertainment."

What to Wear

Business wear is appropriate for meetings and General Sessions. Formal attire or black-tie should be worn for Gala Evening events.

Light, comfortable clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for tours. Hats and sunglasses may also be worn for sun protection.

We also recommend that you bring a light-weight sweater or jacket in case of cooler temperature fluctuations in meeting rooms and air-conditioned buses.

Anaheim Weather

Typical summer weather is sunny and warm in the daytime with cool evenings. The average high temperature in July is 84°F/29°C. For a current weather forecast, click here.

Marketing Updates

1970-01-01 00:00

Sunrider International

It's been a long time since I posted, but I wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the many projects we're working on in the Marketing Department.

Convention, Convention, Convention!

Obviously, we are working like crazy in preparation for Convention. In addition to building and maintaining the convention website, we've prepared welcome videos, which I hope you've all seen.

We're working with a great production company to bring a high-tech, high-touch feel to the Convention. I don't want to say too much, but it will be different from anything you've seen at our Convention before. I'm also very excited for the LA Plant Ribbon Cutting so you can see how incredibly huge and state-of-the-art it is. It's been a headache and nightmare to move, but it's all for the great purpose of making the best products.

New Products and New Packaging

Based on the convention pre-order sales report, I can see you are all dying to get your hands on our new products. John even has IBOs calling him to get samples. We're busy finalizing all of the packaging, components, brochures, and flyers for the new products. I hope you all were able to order them because they are fantastic. I especially love the Eye Cream and MetaShaper™.

During Convention, you'll also get to see the new product packaging for our tried-and-true products. This has been long overdue. If you look at our new promotional flyer for Fortune Delight® you can get a sneak peek at the new look of our packaging. I really love the new designs and can't wait for them to get phased into production.

New Marketing Tools

This brings me to the new marketing tools we're developing. Do you like having the Product Catalog e-book on the website? I'm planning on doing more e-books. We'll also be posting a new product flyer every week for the Starter Pack products. We're also developing a new Company Profile, new Sunrider® Training CD-ROM (which will also go online), Sunrider® Training Workbook, new Sunrider Simply the Best® video, new Compensation Plan marketing tools, and more. I think you'll be pleased with the new tools we have coming your way. Most of them were based on your suggestions.

I know we are working on even more projects, but I have to get back to work. By the way, remember to place your orders for promotional products before the end of the month! I'll see you at Convention!

The Best Ingredients

2008-06-05 23:44

Sunrider International

Sometimes, our customers and IBOs wonder if we use organic ingredients. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation. A government agency must inspect and certify the farm before the food can be labeled "organic."

Our products primarily use herbs and plants that grow in the wild in their natural environment. I believe nature is the best "farmer"—man cannot successfully duplicate many of nature's best creations. That's why we use ingredients grown by nature rather than organic farms.

As a manufacturer of health foods, I am especially concerned about the environment. Because of pollution, many foods, even organic foods, may contain unacceptable levels of heavy metals. We monitor the heavy metal content of our herbs and often reject hundreds of pounds of herbs that do not meet our strict standards.

In addition to the heavy metal content, I also care about how our foods are handled. All herbs and plants, whether grown in the wild, in an organic farm, or in a traditional farm, have dirt, pests, and other contaminants. We take the extra steps of cleaning the herbs by hand and machine rather than grinding and/or irradiating the herbs along with their contaminants.

We also use a trade-secret manufacturing process to extract and concentrate the beneficial essences from our herbs. This makes the final product much more powerful and effective than just mixing the herbs on the ingredient listing.

I want all of you to have confidence that Sunrider uses the best ingredients and makes the best products.

The 2008 Regional Leadership Conference Cruise—an Amazing...

2008-05-23 22:43

Sunrider International

I must admit that when it was decided that this year's Regional Leadership Conference will take place on a cruise, I was a little disappointed. I am only telling you this, since it turned out much better then I expected and you really should keep reading…

After months of preparations, 270 IBOs from Hungary, Western Europe, Israel, Russia and Eastern Europe reported to the dock of the cruise ship "Navigator of the Seas" in Barcelona, on a rainy noon hour of May 10, 2008. When we saw the 15-storey (above water) structure that was about to sail us, we were astonished, and seeing the enormous ship made us unbelievably curious and filled with anticipation for things to come.

After our passports were checked, we entered the ship, and I felt like a little boy that has to see it all without missing a thing. I found myself wandering among the luxurious mall, the theater halls, and the basketball and softball courts. I couldn't miss the amazing gym and dining rooms, the ice skating rink, the children's deck and much more, until we were called to attend the luxurious dinner and were already on our way to our first port stop in Marseille.

On the first night, Dr. and Mrs. Chen hosted a private dinner with 6 IBOs from Western Europe. During dinner, the Chens took the opportunity to teach and train the attending IBOs and emphasize important points about business building and how Sunrider has developed a unique and innovative model for building a franchise-like business for the benefit of its IBOs.

On the next day we woke up to the sound of the announcer welcoming us to Marseille, a typical port city full of seafood restaurants and coffee shops. After a big breakfast, we went on a short tour of the city and visited its fascinating fish market (the smell was certainly not fascinating…). Watching a live octopus trying to sneak away from the display shelf it was placed on, and the fish merchant forcing it back into place was definitely a unique experience.

That afternoon we were already on our way to Sardinia. On the ship, the last preparations for dinner were already being made, and the chamber men gave us wonderful service and cleaned our rooms for the evening. One of the Israeli IBOs met me on my way to dinner and she asked me wonderingly, "Why do we deserve all this? And without paying for it…"*

On the second evening, the Chens had dinner with six Israeli IBOs and, of course, used the time between courses to train and teach the participants.

The Western European and Hungarian IBOs started their third day attending training sessions, in small 30-people groups. During the sessions Dr. Chen emphasized the importance of the 4-points approach meeting and 6-points opportunity meeting. Dr. Chen also stressed how crucial it is that all IBOs use the same terms and send out the same message.

After the Chen's training, the groups dispersed, and we all went to shore in Cagliari, the capital city of the Italian island of Sardinia. In spite of the slightly bleak weather, we went to tour the city with an Israeli tour guide that lives there. Our guide took us to the "Elephant Tower," from which we had a beautiful view of the entire city and port, and to the largest local church. We finished our tour with a taste of excellent Italian ice cream and went back on the ship. One thing that truly amazed me during the tour is that although over 3,000 tourists came to the city on our ship, local businessmen still closed their businesses in the afternoon, for their famous siesta. We left Sardinia and set sail towards Sicily.

That night, after another luxurious dinner, which the Chens shared with 6 Hungarian IBOs, we all watched a spectacular ice-skating show, which generated heavy applause from the amazed audience.

We arrived in Palermo early on the fourth morning and went on a long tour day. Most of the Israeli group went sightseeing together. Palermo is beautiful; it has modern shopping squares as well as a lovely old city, and the people of Palermo are very welcoming and hospitable.

The Vucciria open market place was impossible to miss; we were pulled in by the wonderful smell from the food stands, the fresh fruit and vegetables, the Italian cheese delicatessens, with cheeses you can smell from a mile away, and of course, the daily masterpiece of the market—a freshly caught swordfish put on display.

After an exhausting 7-hour tour, we went back on the ship, and I met another IBO. She told me that she met a friend from Israel on the ship, and when her friend asked her what she was doing there, she answered that she earned a full-expense-paid cruise, working with Sunrider.* Her friend could not believe her ears. She said she always heard about Sunrider, but she never thought the stories were true. That woman joined Sunrider and became an IBO that night.

On the fourth evening the Chens had dinner with 5 IBOs from Eastern Europe. The Chens emphasized to the participants the great earning potential of the Sunrider business, and told them that many people have already achieved their optimal goals working with Sunrider.

We spent the fifth day, during which most of the training meetings were held, sailing back to Barcelona. That morning, Israeli and Eastern European IBOs met with Dr. and Mrs. Chen in small groups, for an almost personal training. During the meetings, the Chens emphasized how important it is to train your downline and teach them how to talk instead of just letting them listen to you. The Chens said it is important to correct your downline while they are talking, in order to help them present the 4-point approach and 6-point opportunity meeting fluently and professionally. The Chens encouraged everyone to keep training to make their approach believable.

At noon, the Chens held a general session for all 270 participating IBOs, during which they stressed the importance of duplication. Dr. Chen said recruiting 10 IBOs a month is not enough, you have to teach them how to duplicate your actions, so they can recruit 10 more people per month themselves.

At the end of the training session, Mrs. Chen asked several IBOs from different countries to come on stage and answer questions about subjects learned during the convention.

In conclusion I would like to say this was an amazing experience for me, one that I will no doubt repeat with my family.

At the end of the fifth day, the Israeli and Eastern European groups had a meeting to sum up the convention, and all IBOs said they had an extraordinary experience, an experience that they could only have thanks to Sunrider.* Some of our IBOs even asked to stay on the ship for its next cruise…

Sincerely,

Oved Levi
Director of Regional Operations

2008 Sunrider Leadership Conference—Mediterranean Cruise, May 10th...

2008-06-06 22:51

Sunrider International

We really wanted to make this year's Europe Leadership Conference something very special. An event that would truly show the Sunrider Lifestyle! After discussing it last year with Mrs. Chen, we both agreed that a Mediterranean cruise would be the way to sail, as we could enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean coastline and countryside.

No other part of the world is so richly imbued with history and culture, and blessed with such spectacular scenery as Europe. The cruise vacation brought us to some of the most exciting ports in Europe. The days ashore presented an invitation to adventure, education, and enjoyment, discovering the beauty of the Mediterranean and over 25 centuries of history, art and culture. Some of the IBOs had never been on a cruise and were not sure about the idea, but on the last day, I was so happy when so many came to see me to say that the cruise was amazing and that they had already called their downline to let them know what they had missed!

Want to know more?

The first port: Provence (Marseille), France. Some of the IBOs went on a city tour that was a journey through the historical and maritime past of Marseille, known as the melting pot of Europe. They passed Marseille's large industrial harbor after departing the pier and headed towards the city center. En route to the Notre-Dame de la Garde Cathedral, they viewed the historic, older section of the city. Notre-Dame de la Garde is a beautiful basilica set high atop the hills above the Old Harbor, and its interior is finished with multicoloured marble mosaics. The journey from the Cathedral to Longchamp Palace took them along a road that runs alongside the sea with a stop to take photos and to view the beautiful islands guarding the entrance to Marseille. The final stop was at Longchamp Palace, a monumental castle adorned with magnificent fountains, waterfalls and gardens.

The second port: Cagliari, Sardinia. Some IBOs went on a sightseeing tour that allowed them to discover the hidden beauties of this magnificent city. It began with a drive from the pier to the city walls where they admired the Roman amphitheatre. Then they visited the National Archaeology Museum to discover many archaeological finds like the typical Sardinian small bronzes and the Nora Stone (ninth century B.C.), where Sardinia is mentioned for the first time. They also walked in the heart of the medieval city and explored its beauty.

The third port: Palermo, Sicily. Italy, probably the most beautiful country (my Italian roots might be affecting my judgment). Palermo was named by the Ancient Greeks as "Panormus," meaning "all port." Its beauty, history and elegance were revealed as some of the IBOs decided to travel the streets of Palermo. The city is noted for its rich history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, which played an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,700 years old! They walked along the Via Liberta, considered to be the most important street in the city because of its size and the double row of plane trees that line this majestic way. They admired Teatro Politeama, the main theatre of the town built in the 19th century and strolled along the Via Ruggero Settimo, also known as the salon of Palermo because of the elegance of its shops. What an experience!

It was such an exciting week that I forgot to mention that the conference, hosted by Drs. Chen, was held onboard the impressive ship "Navigator of the Seas." Over 270 Independent Business Owners from all over Europe, Hungary, Israel, Russia and South Africa enjoyed the Sunrider Lifestyle while sailing through the deep blue Mediterranean Sea.

The Navigator of the Seas is one of the biggest vessels in the world, with so much to see and do onboard. She offers amazing features like a spa, gym, rock-climbing wall, ice-skating rink, an indoor shopping mall-like promenade, as well as fine food in the magnificent three-storey dining room. Every night finishes off with top-class entertainment in the elegant theatre.

The Leadership Conference meetings were held in the ship's Conference Centre and provided attendees with inspiration and motivation. Dr. Chen shared his powerful Business Advice by explaining the 4-step Sunrider approach and the 6-point opportunity meeting. He reminded everyone to train their Downlines in this method, to practice the various steps with them and to talk about the income potential that Sunrider can bring to every Independent Business Owner. Sunrider has already helped many people around the world achieve their optimal goals.* Mrs. Chen followed with her special energy and enthusiasm as she conducted the New IBO Training and tested the Business Leaders on Frequently Asked Questions. Drs. Chen also presented new products that will be launched at the upcoming Grand Convention in Anaheim, California. Mrs. Chen ended the meeting by surprising everyone with a raffle where happy winners received samples of the innovative new products.

It truly was a memorable week and another example of how Sunriders from all over the world can enjoy the fantastic Sunrider lifestyle and optimize their lives.*

Next is the event of the year—the Grand Convention in Anaheim, California!

Come and join thousands of other IBOs for another unforgettable experience. Register on-line and mark your calendars, July 21–26.

Looking forward to seeing you in beautiful Anaheim, California!

IBOs Meet with Success at SR HQ

2008-05-22 21:39

Sunrider International

Business Leader training meetings were held at Sunrider World Headquarters April 23–25. During this time Dr. and Mrs. Chen shared their knowledge and hospitality with two groups of specially invited IBOs who arrived from around the world. In addition to attending meetings, IBOs from Canada, China, Malaysia, the USA, and Taiwan were given tours of the Chen Art Gallery, the Botanical Garden, and the incredible new manufacturing facilities in Los Angeles. The invitees were also treated as guests of the Chens—dining with them at a local restaurant and at their beautiful home, where they enjoyed great food and company.

When they got down to business, the meetings were fast-paced, full of energy, and packed with practical training. As always, they were also punctuated with insights from both Chens.

Dr. Chen got everyone thinking when he posed the following question:

"When a lady goes out shopping, what does she think about first? When you shop for a new car, what do you consider first?"

Personally, I was stumped. My wife wasn't there to help me with the first question. And it had been years since I bought a new car…

Dr. Chen quickly provided the answer though: "The Brand."

Dr. Chen elaborated by saying, "Brand is first, style next, and material last. Likewise, "When you buy a car, first you think of the brand."

Dr. Chen went on to describe how it's up to all IBOs to increase the brand recognition of Sunrider. He stated the importance of presenting "a unified look, approach, and communication," which helps establish a strong, readily identifiable brand image.

Dr. Chen had this to say about the Sunrider opportunity:

"Why is Sunrider's franchise-like business the best? Let's compare it to some other ways one can try to make money:

"Buying and renting out real estate property is too much hassle. And the rent may not even cover the interest on a bank loan. Stock markets have too much fluctuation, too much risk. A franchise business can be good but it takes a BIG initial investment.

"Sunrider's franchise-like business is the best. Sunrider takes the hassle out of owning a business. No inventory, virtually no risk—you simply use Sunrider's time-tested [26 years!] system and support. You can build an enterprise like McDonald's, but without the trouble and at a low cost. And Sunrider is different from other network marketing companies because as a Sunrider IBO, you're the boss—the owner of your own franchise-like business—not a salesperson."

Mrs. Chen covered a range of topics, including the need to develop a 2nd generation of business leaders:

"Have your business continue into the future. Building a strong support system will enable you to have financial freedom when you retire. We need to do better about explaining the income potential of Sunrider to the 2nd generation. Encourage your kids just like I'm encouraging my kids to take over the business someday. Have them choose Sunrider, because we have the greatest income potential and you can help people everywhere improve the quality of their lives. Bring your children to the Grand Convention in July—my daughters Sunny and Wendy will be teaching a workshop especially designed for the next generation."

Dr. and Mrs. Chen also talked about the importance of setting big optimum goals and the power of having a big dream. Dr. Chen helped wrap up the training by providing a personal example of how through having a dream and working hard, anything is possible:

While growing up as a child, his family was poor and they didn't have much. His prized possession was a broken toy airplane that he'd found. He loved that plane though and fixed it up the best he could. He played with the plane every day and dreamed that someday he'd be able to fly on a real plane and see the world.

Today he does fly on an airplane—the Sunrider Corporate Airplane—which he uses to fly around the world with our IBOs, living the Sunrider dream.

IBOs from Korea Enjoy Leadership Tour of Japan

2008-05-12 22:28

Japan is known to most Koreans as "a country that is near and at the same time far." Albeit Japan is only a couple hours' flight away from Korea, I never had the chance to visit Japan except for one short business trip in 2000. I didn't have a chance to see much of Japan then; all you normally see during a business trip is the hotel where you're staying, the office where you conduct your business, and airplanes (lots of them) at the airport. Thus Japan indeed had been a country near and far to me until I took 180 IBOs to Japan for our Leadership Tour 2008 from 30th March to 03rd April. This time I even brushed up on my Japanese language (though it was only "survival Japanese").

Contrary to our expectation, the weather was not on our side when we arrived at Narita Airport on the 30th March. Because of the rain and heavy wind, the wind-chill in Tokyo was very low that day, making us almost shiver without a windbreaker. But even this bad weather couldn't stop our IBOs who were eager to explore Japan as much as possible. After having managed to warm up their bodies with hot oden soup over lunch, they got impatient to "hit the road" again in the rain. Our first stop was the Toyota Automobile Showroom, located at Odaiba Island, where our IBOs made trial rides in various new models of Toyota cars. After having tried a "virtual drive" on the stage, I could overhear a few IBOs talking about "buying that baby soon" with their Sunrider money.

People got soaked in the heavier rain during the walk back to the tour bus and their minds were already immersed in taking a hot spring bath. All of us changed into traditional Japanese bathrobes called Yukada (they had various colors and designs available for us to choose). To confess, I had a hard time breathing; I tied a Yukada belt too tight to hide my "potbelly" in front of our IBOs. Before reaching the bath, there was an area like a market place where many kiosks were arranged in rows and that were selling very tempting munchies and cute little souvenirs. Though dinner was expected right after our bath, many people had to wrestle with the temptation of those aromatic foods while moving into the bath.

As an old Korean saying goes, "People become great friends after taking a hot bath together naked," because there's nothing to 'hide' in that bath. Accordingly, I think I've created even stronger bonding with our male IBOs from this experience. It was so relaxing to soak our bodies in an open-air hot bath, and I almost fell asleep in the water but an IBO let me know that it was time to go. Before I move on to our dinner part, I must tell you about a "culture shock" that I experienced in the bath: The body-scrubbers and attendant in the men's bath were women! Of course they were in work uniforms, but we were all naked. The other Korean male IBOs and I were busy trying to cover ourselves, but the workers simply acted calm in front of us so we realized it was no big deal. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"…Right?

The dinner was just spectacular! Dining tables were arranged in a huge room with Japanese Tatami floor. All 180 IBOs sat on the floor and were decked out in a dazzling display of colorful Yukada robes. And the dainty food was almost too beautiful to eat! Because New Year practically starts on 01st April in Japan for businesses and schools, they traditionally have a ceremony called Kakami-Hiraki literally meaning "breaking a wine pot" to open the New Year. I invited four of our most senior IBOs (two males and two females) to break the wine pot together and to propose a toast to "Sunrider Money" for everyone. After dinner, we arrived at the New Otani Hotel.

The Monday morning of 31st March was rainy and windy, even worse than the previous day, during the long drive to Yokohama. Fortunately though, the weather cleared up by the time we arrived in Yokohama, and bright sunshine welcomed us when we started a sightseeing tour of the city. The tour included beautiful Yamashita Park that stretched along the shoreline of Yokohama Harbor, bustling streets and shops in China Town, and the modern and clean Minato Mirai 21 area. Upon our return to Tokyo, we visited one of the symbols of Japan, the Imperial Palace. Though allowed to see only the outer wall and garden, we appreciated a tasteful garden that was classical and tranquil. The Palace definitely had something peculiar that appealed to our artistic sentiment even just from outside. Next stop was Ginja Street, one of the most popular streets for tourists because of the latest fashion, energetic young people, neon signs, restaurants, bars, and galleries. Our IBOs ventured into the busy streets of Ginja for a while to stroll around and to find good bargains.

Bright spring sunshine blessed us on 01st April, the day we were to climb Mt. Fuji, the highest mountain (3,776M) in Japan. Instead of saying "to climb Mt. Fuji," I should say "to visit the mouth of Mt. Fuji," which still allowed us to access and enjoy the splendor of the mountain, as tour guides had worried in previous days about the weather affecting accessibility. Japan is a polytheistic country believing that deities or divine spirits reside in all things in nature. And after experiencing this majestic place, we all surely believed that there must be a divine spirit in Mt. Fuji. The mountain was fully covered with snow and stood against an emerald-blue sky shrouded in mystical layers of clouds. The indescribable striking beauty of blue, brown, green, and white in harmony made us not only inspired with awe but also fascinated with the grandeur of Mt. Fuji. Leaving the holy mountain behind us, we went for a sightseeing trip of Hakone— riding an excursion boat in Ashi Lake (the lake was 723M above the sea level), which is located in the Owaqutani Valley, and another hot spring bath at Morinoyu Onsen (one for the road!).

After a thrilling tour program and fun activities for three days in Japan, there came the day for us to get even more excited, as we got the chance to learn from the ever-passionate Drs. Chen about how to succeed big and quickly with the Sunrider business opportunity! The seminar took place at the Toshi Center in Tokyo on 02nd April. During the seminar, Dr. Chen delivered an impassioned message to 180 Korean IBOs about how Sunrider offers the best business opportunities, which are even better than opportunities offered by conventional franchise businesses. Thus, in order to realize our dreams and achieve success, Dr. Chen stated that IBOs should focus on promoting Sunrider's income potential, selling product, setting optimum goals, and building your organization through the Starter Pack. His powerful speech filled Korean IBOs with enthusiasm and motivation.

When Mrs. Chen took over the stage for the second session, I could see that some IBOs started to get nervous because they were aware that Mrs. Chen would ask them randomly about how to conduct New IBO Training and how to answer the FAQs. However, Mrs. Chen relieved the tension in the room with a joke, saying, "Nobody wants to make eye contact with me, but it's fine because Steve gave me a name list of 180 people in this room." Everybody laughed hard, and it was a very useful session for existing IBOs to learn how to train their downlines efficiently. It was a very fun and enjoyable session after all, because Mrs. Chen first picked one IBO from the name list to answer a question and then she went on from that IBO's uplines by asking, "Who's your upline?" rather than picking other people from the list. Korean IBOs were quite good in answering her questions but they also felt very grateful in learning more professional ways of handling such FAQs.

The finale of Sunrider Korea's Leadership Meeting 2008 in Japan was the Gala Dinner held later that evening at the New Otani Hotel. It kicked off with a traditional Japanese taiko drum performance, and Drs. Chen and Sunny Beutler entered the room to the majestic beats of these drums and a standing ovation from the Koran IBOs. Then we all enjoyed a fantastic buffet dinner, followed by performances of different IBO groups. The performances included a Taekwondo martial arts dance featuring a breaking demonstration of thick pine boards (all performed by female IBOs—tough Korean women!), a very cute replica of "Tell-Me Dance" that has won sweeping popularity among Koreans, and a "Rap & Dance" that used the Starter Pack as the theme.

The highlight of the evening when Dr. Chen went on the stage to sing "Can't help falling in love with you" while fixing his gaze on Mrs. Chen, sitting below the stage. With warm-hearted applause from the audience, Dr. Chen then invited Mrs. Chen and Sunny onto the stage for another song together, followed by karaoke songs by various leaders from the VIP table. During the karaoke, In-Ja Park did very comical performances in front of the singers, making us (and the Chens) shake our sides with laughter. The memorable night came to an end with Drs. Chen's new product introduction and lucky draw. Various new products were introduced and given away (well before the official new product launching at the Grand Convention) to Korean IBOs. They looked forward to the launching of these new products and at the same time they were proud of Dr. Chen's expertise and the way he continually develops such wonderful products for them.

As the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And, Korean IBOs were given a chance to work hard and at the same time to have fun through this Leadership Tour and Seminar in Japan.

Dr. and Mrs. Chen Host a Truly Korean Experience at the 2008...

2008-04-09 15:45

Sunrider International

I had visited Korea a number of times, and as the saying goes, you never get tired of falling in love with something beautiful. Korea is such a place in my heart. And I talk a lot about "love" in this blog because love was the subject of our theme travel. For our 75 IBOs from Singapore and Malaysia, my colleagues and myself, the minute we touched down on Seoul, we were transformed into young lovers of Korea's culture, film stars, beauty, kimchi …. and not forgetting the friendship that bonded us as one Sunrider family.

We started off on a blissful Sunday morning on 16th March, to Chuncheon and Namiseom Island, which are the location places for the shooting of that famous Korean drama, "Winter Sonata". This is one of the most popular TV series in Korea, Hong Kong, China, Japan and even Malaysia. The series is built around the romance of falling in love for the first time….. and for all time (sigh …) Well, you should have been there to see, touch and experience all the lovely mementoes, souvenirs, pictures and the actual settings where the filming was done. I'm quite sure you would be just as swept off your feet by the romance of it all!

We were brought back to reality when we were told that there is a small ostrich farm on Namiseom Island, and one could race with the ostriches while riding bicycles. But we didn't take up the challenge!

Our next stop was the Aqua World, which is an indoor water park with numerous therapeutic hot springs such as pine-tree spring and fruit-extract spring, saunas including Jade Sauna, Charcoal Sauna and Amethyst Sauna. We loved the Health Pool Zone and Amusement Zone. There was also a Water Slide for our young-at-heart IBOs, a massage corner for women and even a Couple Bath for couples.

The Monday morning of 17th March saw us at Mt. Sorak National Park. It was really the most awesome experience for all of us. Everything was covered with snow (well, almost everything!). The Park's spiky mountain peaks, crystal clear ponds, rock formations, valleys and waterfalls were so serene, just like a Korean painting.

We explored Abai Village, which is the filming location of another famous Korean series, "Endless Love". Abai Village has the distinction of being the heroine, Eun-Seo's hometown. As we walked along the quaint homes and stores that were reminiscent of the '60s and '70s, we felt really connected to the tragic heroine and how she must have felt when she had to leave her lover.

We also visited the majestic Shinheung Temple, a massive and beautiful architecture which was built by a monk named Chanjang during the Shilla Dynasty. We easily agreed with our Guide that this is by far the most impressive temple in the Sorak Mountain area!

From romantics, we were turned into children (albeit BIG children) on Tuesday, 18th March at the Everland Resort. This is South Korea's largest theme park and it has been ranked sixth in the world. We had lots of fun, starting at the European Adventure and enjoying the thrills and spills that took us through the vibrant themes of Magic Land, American Land and Global Fair. It was a great opportunity to snap photos, enjoy the spectacular shows and the rides.

Well, all this made us pretty adventurous ……. for some retail therapy! Our guide took us to Dongdaemun Market, one of the major markets in Korea with over 20 shopping malls that specialize in wholesale clothing, and we found some very good bargains for clothes, accessories and shoes.

On Wednesday 19th March, Dr. and Mrs. Chen hosted a leadership training seminar for a small group of selected IBOs. They were given very extensive training on business concept, the importance of setting optimum goals, business building, and duplication. They also were trained on frequently asked questions, new IBOs training, leadership and recognition.

Concurrent with this training seminar, the rest of our IBOs toured Sunrider Korea's new office. They were very impressed with the office and took many photos to share with their downlines.

Later, this group of IBOs continued with the last day of the tour and visited a Kimchi factory for an inside look at Korea's most relished food. Kimchi, as many would know, is the country's national heritage and the main staple of Korean daily diet. We learnt that it is traditionally prepared with Chinese cabbage, red pepper, garlic, salted fish, ginger and other natural ingredients, then stored underground in clay containers to ferment for at least four weeks.

Did we say that this was the last stop for our IBOs? Hold your horses! Our IBOs would never return to our hotel without one last shopping spree, and this time they went to Myeongdong Market. Our IBOs had a fantastic time shopping at what is tagged as the trendiest, most fashionable shopping district in the country. They found a variety of stores from upscale boutiques and fashion malls to small stalls, and bought quality brand-name fashion wear, accessories and luxury items. They were so proud and happy to pay for everything with their Sunrider money and said that they truly enjoyed the Sunrider successful lifestyle!*

Finally, after all that shopping, sightseeing, photo-taking, having fun and enjoying Korean food, we were all ready to settle down for what everyone had come for: Dr. and Mrs. Chen's Leadership Training Seminar. Our IBOs joined more than 400 IBOs from Hong Kong and Taiwan at the prestigious Imperial Palace Hotel, South Korea.

Our IBOs were excited and thrilled with the Chens' presence. They found Dr. Chen's advice on promoting SR's potential income and SR's products, aiming for the optimum goal, and recruiting more than 10 IBOs every month particularly useful. They also felt that they understood more clearly why Sunrider is better than a franchise business and the role of IBOs in the Company.

Our IBOs were nervous when Mrs.Chen took over the rest of the session as they were aware that Mrs.Chen would ask them how they conducted their New IBOs Training as well as the FAQs.

However, Mrs. Chen put everyone at ease, and when she called participants to answer her questions, they actually found the experience fun, enjoyable and challenging, albeit slightly nerve-wrecking!

In fact, our IBOs were grateful when Mrs. Chen pointed out their mistakes, as they felt that they could remember better this way. Under Mrs. Chen's training, they understood why such training should be conducted regularly especially for new IBOs.

At the Gala Dinner later that evening, it was truly a glamorous Korean finale to a wonderful week. Dr. and Mrs. Chen got everyone to join in the celebration with their friendliness. Dinner was absolutely delicious and everyone loved the Classical Music Performance by the Korea Tourism Board, as well as the various performances put up by the different countries' IBOs. From Malaysia, we had two IBO performances and from Singapore, there was one. They were really spectacular to watch as our IBOs danced and sang, and got everyone into the party mood!

Another highlight was when Dr. and Mrs. Chen went on stage to sing, and were greeted by overwhelming applause. The Chens also invited the leaders from the VIP table to sing on stage, and our leaders did just that! Our leaders drew a lot of support from the audience for their hearty, albeit slightly off-tune, singing and everyone enjoyed the fun of it all.

The Chens were very generous and gave the new IBOs valuable gifts of Sunrider's new products, which will be launched at the Grand Convention in July 2008. The new IBOs were really touched by the Chens' generosity. The magical night finished off with a karaoke session and disco, and as the saying goes, the sun never goes down for those who work hard and play hard!

The 2008 Arnold Sports Festival was a big hit for Sunrider...

2008-04-02 19:57

Sunrider International

I'm excited to tell our blog readers a little about Sunrider International's participation both as a sponsor and a competitor at the 2008 Arnold Sports Festival, a 3-day event that promotes "a weekend of sports and a lifetime of fitness." Held in Columbus, Ohio from February 29 to March 2, it's the largest annual sports festival in the world, with 17,000 athletes competing in a wide variety of events—only the Olympics are bigger and they occur every four years. The Festival features 37 events and 12 Olympic sports, and attracts 150,000 sports and fitness enthusiasts from around the world. And this year was extra special as it was the 20th anniversary of the Festival's centerpiece event—the Arnold Classic—which is considered to be among the most prestigious bodybuilding competitions in the world.

Sunrider as Sponsor
One of the main reasons Sunrider started sponsoring the Arnold Sports Festival in 2006 was to provide financial support to showcase top athletes from China. This event also provides a great venue to introduce the attendees to a successful worldwide company that has been providing "Health and Wealth" to the world for over 25 years. Sunrider was delighted this year to sponsor Zhang Jie and his teammate Lu Changliang, junior weightlifting champions from the Chinese Weightlifting Association. Both of these amazing athletes wowed the crowds on center stage with their performances as shown below.

Sunrider is also dedicated to supporting various other athletic activities and events, as evidenced by Sunrider International's selection to be the sole nutritional supplement provider for the Israel Olympic team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

When people ask me "What is Sunrider?" I often give them the following quick 30-second response:

● 25 years of stable financial growth
● Currently doing business in 42 countries
● Self manufacturer of over 400 exclusive products
● Own and operate over 2 million square feet of manufacturing facilities in 4 countries
● Opportunities to own a business system we consider to be better than a franchise.

Here are some approximate details about our newest manufacturing plant addition currently under construction near Los Angeles, CA:

● State-of the-art pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing equipment
● Nearly 1 million-square feet of working space
● 150 million dollar estimated total investment
● Perimeter of the project is approximately 1 mile long
● Ribbon cutting ceremony during our Grand Convention in July 2008

Sunrider as Competitor
Although I've always enjoyed bodybuilding as a hobby, I became really excited about competing in the sport because of Sunrider's sponsorship presence at the event and being surrounded by thousands of athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Last year, I set a personal goal to compete in my first amateur bodybuilding show and I took third place in the lightweight division. A few months later I found out that my third place finish had qualified me to compete at the 2nd annual amateur bodybuilding competition during the Arnold Sports Festival. Sunrider was already planning to send me back in 2008 as a sponsor representative anyways, so now I could also participate "on stage" instead of just watching from a distance—this was to be the perfect mix of business and pleasure!

My exercise regimen consisted of working with my professional fitness trainer twice a week for about an hour, and then a one-hour per day workout 4 more days during the week by myself, and then resting on Sundays. My dietary supplementation for this show came only from Sunrider's exclusively formulated "foods" made with our own pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing equipment to ensure the highest quality foods. From where I started before beginning this journey to compete as a bodybuilder, I can enthusiastically say that I looked great and felt great on stage!

All in all Sunrider was honored to participate both as a sponsor and as a competitor during this very special anniversary year for the Arnold Sports Festival.

Torrance Advantage Award

2008-03-21 15:57

Sunrider International

On Thursday, March 13, 2008, Sunrider International won the inaugural 2007 Torrance Advantage Award in the "People to People" category from the City of Torrance. The awards ceremony took place at the Torrance Marriott with a wonderful buffet and the attendance of the City Mayor, Frank Scotto, and other city officials. The unveiling of the winners was a surprise to all who applied. Even though we had a feeling that Sunrider would win in one of the four categories since we fit into each one, we were still surprised and happy to know that we won the "People to People" award. Sunny Beutler and Paul McCabe accepted the award on behalf of Sunrider. Our beautiful crystal award and framed letter from the mayor will be on display at our Torrance Headquarters.

The Torrance Advantage Awards were established to recognize innovative economic development strategies of local significance. The Awards are designed to showcase best practices and highlight outstanding results. Through this recognition, the City of Torrance thanks businesses that contribute significantly to the growth and enrichment of the Torrance community.

The "People to People Award" Category honors an organization's excellence in enhancing employment opportunities in Torrance. Additionally, it honors an organization's commitment to its current employees and investments in their talented and skilled workforce, including:

o Types of jobs created

o Number of jobs created

o New & existing programs for employee motivation and career advancement

Additional info is available at
www.torrnet.com/TAA.htm

This was a great event, and we were honored to receive recognition from the city since Sunrider has been in Torrance since 1986. A little recognition goes a long way. This is for all of our employees who have made such a great impact on the company and have helped us achieve great heights.

Drs. Chen Host 400 Sunrider Business Leaders at the Leadership...

1970-01-01 00:00

Sunrider International

If you polled the 400 North American Business Leaders who attended the Leadership Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, held during February 17 – 24, all of them would give it "two thumbs up!" The setting at the luxurious Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa overlooking a wide stretch of beach and the Pacific Ocean was a paradise and it just got better and better as the week went on.
We started out on Monday afternoon, loaded on nine buses, with a visit to the famous Polynesian Culture Center, where we spent eight hours enjoying a taste of South Pacific culture, visiting native villages, and viewing an IMAX presentation. We then were treated to an authentic luau and an amazing and spectacular two-hour show with a cast of over 100 that kept the audience riveted.

Tuesday's tour to the Pearl Harbor monument was relevant and moving. We watched an historical film depicting the events of December 7, 1941, and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and then took the ferryboat to the Arizona Memorial, which sits on top of the sunken hull of the battleship USS Arizona. This memorial honors the crewmen who lost their lives during the attack. It was an emotional tour and we were touched by it.

We had a delicious buffet lunch following Pearl Harbor at an upscale Japanese restaurant and had the entire place to ourselves! The city bus tour took us to places of interest giving a perspective of island culture, history and landscape.

Wednesday and Thursday were "free" days allowing Sunriders to select leisure activities of their choice, which for many included hiking, snorkeling, shopping, or island hopping. During this time we also had seven Opportunity and Training meetings featuring the sought-after John Teng. Approximately 250 people attended these productive, positive, and informative sessions, including guests from Hawaii.

Thursday and Saturday mornings, selected key leaders and guests were invited to a special meeting with Drs. Chen.

Friday's General Meeting, which was emceed by Jeff Smith, was open to everyone and it was inspirational and exceptionally motivational. There was energy in the room and Dr. Chen really was at his best – and most of you know how powerful his message can be! He reiterated his Business Building Advice, focusing on the 4-step approach techniques. Dr. Chen then went on to urge the IBOs to make approaches a habit and said that when they do this, sponsoring will happen naturally. To get to this point, Dr. Chen talked about what they have to do: (1) change their mindset; (2) have the courage the face the ensuing challenges; and (3) work hard to achieve their "optimal" goal. No one does it better than Dr. Chen as he mixes humor, business acumen, and logic to drive home the point. Based on the feedback I have received, he did drive home the message.

Mrs. Chen followed him with her energy and enthusiasm and presented a PowerPoint on Frequently Asked Questions. She feels these are extremely important and that all business builders should learn them and be able to answer them with confidence and clarity. She asked the questions and had the IBOs answer the questions.

The lunch that followed at the hotel was like all the meals we shared in Hawaii – EXCELLENT! We got more compliments on this conference, food-wise, than on any of our conventions or cruises. As a matter of fact, all the comments on the Leadership Conference have been extremely positive, if not glowing.

Friday evening was an exceptionally enjoyable event. The two-hour Alii Kai Catamaran Sunset Dinner Cruise was a resounding success! Sunriders were treated royally and had the entire deck reserved exclusively for them. Everyone had a great time listening to Polynesian music and dancing. The entertainers also did a fantastic job in getting all IBOs to participate in dancing with them, even after the boat docked back in port. Once again, the food was delicious and it was a fun-packed evening.

Finally, the week was drawing to a close, but the Saturday evening Banquet was a grand finale to a fabulous week. Don Caster emceed the evening and kept it going. The buffet dinner was sumptuous, and the highlight of the evening was the IBO performers! There were seven groups that were creative, imaginative, and entertaining – worthy of American Idol! A great moment was when Dr. Chen serenaded Mrs. Chen singing, "I can't help falling in love with you." Even the staff was talked into a karaoke version of "Don't Worry, Be Happy." Dr. Chen once again brought his single-minded passion to the evening and inspired IBOs to make a commitment to change, and approach using the 4-steps and make sponsoring a habit. Mrs. Chen held a raffle where over 50 excited and happy winners won innovative products such as the Antioxidant, Brightening Eye Cream, Color Compact Cases, and new Lip Colors – all of which will be launched during Grand Convention! It truly was a memorable evening.

IBOs enjoyed another incentive from our marketing plan – a free vacation in Hawaii! The average Travel Incentive Check was $2,200, which fully paid for a week-long vacation in a setting where the rich and famous play!

When they get back to their homes, the challenge to the IBOs was to have the courage to make the changes that Drs. Chen urged everyone to make. We have no doubt that they will make that commitment to change – I have heard that from many. We are also looking forward to the IBOs making a concerted effort to promote and attend the upcoming Grand Convention in Anaheim, California, with their downlines so they too can immerse themselves in the grandeur of Sunrider while enjoying the global camaraderie, inspiration, and pride this most important event provides.
Aloha, Sunriders, until Grand Convention 2008 at Anaheim!

Simply the Best Seat in the House

2008-02-12 17:10

Sunrider International

As a Sunrider employee, it's always a pleasure and a privilege to have the chance to listen to Dr. Tei-Fu and Dr. Oi-Lin Chen in person, something that normally I only get to do once a year during Grand Convention when I work onsite and attend various events. So I was excited when I was asked to attend a special meeting held at SR HQ last Thursday. The meeting involved North American Business Leaders and Drs. Chen getting together to discuss various business matters, and as Dr. Chen said, "to improve communication and get everyone on the same page."

For the meeting, I was asked by my manager, Wendy Teng, to take notes for future articles; but during the course of the meeting I found it difficult to do, as I'd become so engrossed in what the Chens were saying that I'd sometimes forget to put pen to paper.

Dr. Chen has always impressed me with his charisma and confident yet engaging personality. He's a business visionary who's able to infuse his talks with a down-to-earth practicality and a natural sense of humor, making any topic accessible and entertaining (even the stuff dealing with calculation formulas!). It doesn't matter what country or culture you come from—when Dr. Chen speaks, you want to listen. I can see how people around the world have been attracted to Sunrider with such a dynamic spokesperson and leader at the helm.
What struck a chord with me at this particular meeting was Dr. Chen's message about the importance of having the "courage to change." He gave examples how great leaders throughout history had the courage to change, to get out of their comfort zones, and make tough, sometimes unpopular decisions that paved the way for innovation and growth. Dr. Chen not only initiates change, but also embraces it when he believes it'll benefit the lives of Sunriders. Having the courage and dexterity to adapt to changing circumstances and the willingness to learn from experience, and even from other companies, are attributes of his that I think have contributed to Sunrider's continuous growth and success spanning over 25 years.

Mrs. Chen always amazes me with her boundless energy and incisive intellect. She's always ready for any question an attendee might throw at her. And her ability to orchestrate a meeting, to say nothing of Grand Conventions and her global company, is remarkable. She's the ultimate multi-tasker in my book.

At the meeting I saw how she's able to cultivate success in business builders through her organized presentation of the Sunrider marketing plan and by sharing her expert business advice; but most of all I think she helps people maximize their potential through serving as an inspirational role model. Sure, Sunrider provides lots of excellent materials and marketing tools that provide guidance and the blueprints for success, but through experiencing Mrs. Chen, you get a real-life example of how to challenge yourself and go after your goals.

Attending the meeting also gave me the chance to meet some of the Business Leaders and to see them in action (Mrs. Chen sometimes likes to put people in the hot seat, in a good-natured way). Watching the leaders made me realize that although there was an undeniable diversity of backgrounds, ages, and personalities, there was a common denominator that made them all distinctly "Sunriders"—they all exuded an almost tangible passion for the Sunrider business. Hearing them tell their incredible success stories almost made me feel like switching from working at Sunrider to working in Sunrider, as an IBO. For the time being though, I like using the SR gym and working in the great environment at SR HQ too much to change just yet.

Thanks for your time; I need to sign off now to see if I can make sense of my meeting notes.

Hawaii Regional Meeting

2008-01-23 23:38

Sunrider International

The Hawaii Regional Meeting held in Honolulu on December 27, 2007 was very special for me in so many ways. First of all, this trip was part of a prescheduled family Christmas vacation in Hawaii so I got to mix business with pleasure on this one. I have to admit that I always feel a little bit guilty taking up the invitations of our Independent Business Owners to go tour local attractions or do any sightseeing when I visit their beautiful cities during regional meetings. I guess I feel like I get to have all this fun while my wife Wendy is at home wrestling with our kids. Anyways, on this particular trip I could whole-heartedly enjoy the whole package since my family was there, too!

Secondly, my Brother-in-Law Reuben and his wife Katie also made the trip to Hawaii and they treated me to an introductory scuba diving experience for my Christmas present. I braved the merciless power of the Pacific Ocean to a depth of 41 feet and swam right next to sea turtles and eels. Sorry no photos to show since my so called "waterproof" camera immediately filled up with water once I jumped in the water.

Next, the Hawaii meeting date also marked my 4-year wedding anniversary and I am happy to report that I was fully prepared to give Wendy a big surprise during the evening meeting. I hired a guitar player to accompany me as I serenaded Wendy to the music of the Hawaiian Wedding Song. We then danced one more verse of the same song during the intermission between the opportunity meeting and the training meeting. I then handed her a beautiful anniversary ring that I brought with me from the mainland. It was a true-to-form day in the life of the Sunrider family—business and pleasure all mixed together into one big fun event!

And last but not least the actual Hawaii meeting! The evening represented a reunion of the Chen family with our beloved Sunrider friends in Hawaii. With the greatly appreciated help of our dear Sunrider friends, the Sugai family, a beautiful hotel venue was prepared to receive loyal Sunriders and guests at the big event. I was given the chance to share an opportunity meeting overview for all of the new guests. Dr. Chen, founder of Sunrider International, then shared a very powerful training message of how to effectively combine the power of the products with the earning potential of the compensation plan into one solid message that was so easy to understand and duplicate!

Although each trip to Hawaii always seems so short, I am really excited to go back again this February with all of our Sunrider leaders to enjoy the food, entertainment, and training awaiting those who qualified for the North American Leadership Conference. See you in Hawaii my friends!

Sunrider Distributors Now Called Independent Business Owners, New...

1970-01-01 00:00

Sunrider International

We wanted to make sure all of our blog readers are aware of the title change of Distributor to Independent Business Owner. We're very happy with this change and hope you are too. Below is the official announcement from our corporate website:

Sunrider is pleased to announce that Independent Distributors will now be known as Independent Business Owners (IBOs). Effective immediately, the terms Independent Business Owner and IBO will be used and the name "Distributor" will be discontinued. Sunrider founder Dr. Tei-Fu Chen explains, "When I first came to the United States and started Sunrider, my English wasn't very good. We used the name "Distributor" because that's what most companies used at the time. As Sunrider grew, I felt the name Distributor wasn't quite right because it just told part of the story. Our "Distributors" didn't just sell or distribute Sunrider products, they also owned a business that was better than a franchise. Many of them have businesses in several countries and earn the kind of money a franchisor makes. I felt the name Distributor didn't give our people the recognition and status they deserved. Changing the name of Distributor to Independent Business Owner shows what our business is all about - helping people to improve their lifestyles and well-being by becoming successful business owners." In conjunction with changing "Distributor" to "Independent Business Owner," Sunrider is also changing the rank names as follows:

Discontinued Rank Name New Rank Name
Assistant Director Assistant Business Leader
Associate Director Associate Business Leader
Director Business Leader
Lead Director Lead Business Leader
Group Director Group Business Leader
Golden Group Director Golden Group Business Leader
Master Director Master Business Leader
Silver Master Director Silver Master Business Leader
Golden Master Director Golden Master Business Leader
Executive Director Executive Business Leader
Silver Executive Director Silver Executive Business Leader
Golden Executive Director Golden Executive Business Leader

Mrs. Chen says, "Many times, people are confused when they hear that someone is a "Director" in Sunrider. They think that person is an employee or on our Board of Directors. Since we decided to change the name from Distributor to IBO, I wanted to also change the rank names as well so it's easier for people to understand. IBOs who build their business are Sunrider's "Business Leaders" and our business partners. We're very excited about the name changes and many of our IBOs have told me they love their new title."

Sunrider International

To All Sunrider Staff & Employees:

Time is really flying by fast, it is hard to believe we are beginning a new year! As I sit here and reflect on past years I am reminded of all the people in my life who I'm grateful for and of course you all are included in that list.

I love Sunrider and have been a customer and distributor for over 22 years! During that period, I have had the privilege to get to know so many of you for this amount of time!

Throughout these past 22 years I have had such wonderful customer service from all of you. The majority of times your service was not simply just "good" or "adequate" but beyond the expected.

It didn't matter if it was issues with a lost order, needing help with the replicator site, planning events, problems with the website, distributor relationships or just putting in my 2 cents, EVERYONE WAS SO GRACIOUS AND HELPFUL. Wow!

What a blessing you all have been for me and our downline. We sincerely want to thank you all for your assistance, your friendship and for being part of what makes Sunrider so great and different than the rest of the business opportunities available today.

2007 marked the 25th Anniversary of Sunriders success, however with the new Starter Packs, neat packaging, new Newsletters, we will have a great 2008!

Sunrider Supplements are Superior: Study Finds Banned Substances in...

2007-12-20 16:44

Sunrider International

Many people ask why Sunrider® products are Simply the Best™. They may assume that Sunrider's products are just the same as supplements that can be purchased at a store in their local mall. In addition to our many unique Sunrider® products (which can be purchased directly from Sunrider Independent Business Owners), we offer a number of products that are superior to similar competing products found in regular retail stores.

A recent article in USA Today, entitled
Study: Steroids found in supplements, highlights the potential hidden hazards of supplements sold in the U.S. The article cites a study which found that "13 of the 52 supplements (25%) purchased at various U.S. retailers contained small amounts of steroids and six (11.5%) had banned stimulants." A study conducted by the International Olympic Committee showed that 18.8% of the 240 supplements purchased in the U.S. contained steroids. The studies cited in this article include some of the best-selling brands (randomly selected), and most came from mall-based stores.

The study cited two main reasons for the contamination. One reason is contaminated raw materials. With Sunrider products, you can rest assured that there are no artificial or added hormones, steroids, or stimulants in our products. We use the finest herbs and raw materials, checking and cleaning them by hand and machine. We reject whole batches of herbs that do not meet our high standards. Many of the suppliers of our raw materials have worked with Sunrider for a long time, and know the high-quality raw ingredients we demand.

The second reason for contamination is the failure of manufacturers to properly clean their equipment. Sunrider manufactures all of its products in our state-of-the-art facilities, and does not outsource the production to third parties. We monitor all steps of the production process, so you know we do not use tricks to cut corners or save time. Also, our manufacturing facilities are regularly cleaned (using our own
SuperClean™). Because our manufacturing process is kept to such high standards, many of our products are recognized as Kosher and Halal.

Because Sunrider products do not contain any added or artificial steroids, hormones, or stimulants, you know that our products contain only the fine ingredients listed on the labels. A number of Sunrider® products are certified by the
Banned Substances Control Group, and are used by the Israeli Olympic team as they train for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The Sunrider website has more information about Sunrider's Anti-Doping Certification.

Sunrider Holiday Party

1970-01-01 00:00

Sunrider International

Over the past 25 years, Sunrider's corporate employee Holiday Party has evolved into a "can't-miss" party. John and I had a wonderful time at the party. We enjoyed a gourmet meal (I had filet mignon), fun employee performances, dancing, and saw 60 employees win exceptional raffle prizes such as cameras, iPods, cash prizes, gift certificates, HDTVs, and a $1,000 grand prize. Employees also received generous year-end bonus checks. Even if you didn't win a raffle prize, you still earned a bonus check!

My parents not only treat their Distributors like family, they also cultivate a teamwork atmosphere in the corporate office. One of the ways they do this is with the employee performances. When my mom first asked the employees to perform, most grumbled about how she just wanted to embarrass them. Now, it's a full-fledged competition with bragging rights. Departments will spend several hours rehearsing for their performances. The Information Systems department usually gives the performance to beat. This year, though, several departments were contenders for most entertaining performance. Next year, we'll hopefully have better lighting so I can You Tube the performances.
My parents appreciate the hard work and talent of loyal employees. Throughout the party, they recognize loyal employees and our 12 "Employees of the Month." Many employees have worked at Sunrider 5, 10, and 15 years. Several of them reached the 20-year mark this year and Sunrider is paying for their trip to Hawaii!

The employees also gave my parents a special gift: dinner at their favorite restaurant, Matsuhisa, and 2 front row seats to Wicked! Thanks to the employees, my parents will get to enjoy a long
overdue dream date.
Our "Employee of the Year" is Joe Chiang. He manages the programming for the website so many of you may not know him. Before the China convention, he worked around the clock to finish many last-minute projects. We had a few programmers move away, so he was also strapped for manpower. But, he told Mrs. Chen and me that he was the manager for the projects so he was responsible for completing them. He never complained or made excuses and he got the job done! We're all very fortunate to have a great team-player like Joe working on our website.

One of the highlights of the party is the raffle prizes. This year, Distributors donated over $20,000 in raffle prizes for Sunrider's corporate office employees. I used to think that winning cameras, iPods, $1,000 etc. was common practice. However, after going to a few parties at other companies, I realize that each prize given away at a Sunrider party is usually a "grand" prize elsewhere. So on behalf of the corporate office, I thank all who donated! We greatly appreciate your support and generosity!

My family and I will be in Hawaii over the holidays. My father, Dr. Chen, will be holding a meeting in Honolulu on December 27th. If you'll be in town, please join us!

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Wendy

Sunrider Supports Fundraisers

1970-01-01 00:00

Sunrider International

Sunrider was honored to be involved with three wonderful fundraising events held in November:

Sunrider is Sole Corporate Sponsor for Enterprise Mentors International

On Friday, November 2, Sunrider was the sole corporate sponsor of the annual gala fundraiser for Enterprise Mentors International (EMI) in Salt Lake City, Utah. EMI is a non-profit organization that provides micro-finance loans, mentoring, and support for people in developing countries in South America and the Philippines. With almost 1,000 people in attendance, Sunrider was proud to have the honor of donating $15,000 to EMI to help more people gain self-reliance and independence in countries where jobs are very scarce. The average EMI loan is about US$160. Along with each loan, EMI provides counseling, teaches bookkeeping and other necessary skills to maintain the growth of businesses. Please see
http://www.enterprise-mentors.org/index.asp.

Attending the EMI annual gala, representing Sunrider were Sharon Farnsworth Ekins & Shirl Ekins, Carol Call, Chris Williams, Dick & Annette Richards, Kristen Smith and her downline, and Sunny & Jonathan Beutler.

Special Awards were given to the First Lady of Guatemala for her tremendous work in helping families in poverty by helping women start businesses. EMI also awarded the First General Relief Society Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their extensive work in social work and aid to the less fortunate.

The special guest performer for that evening was Michael Ballam, a renowned opera singer and pianist, who told his story of visiting the people who had been helped by EMI in South America.
It was a great privilege to help others gain independence and financial freedom through EMI.

Sunrider is the Platinum Sponsor of the LA Consular Ball

On Friday, November 16, Sunrider was the Platinum Sponsor of the Los Angeles Consular Ball held in Los Angeles at the Intercontinental Hotel. The LA Consular Ball is the annual fundraising event for the Los Angeles Consular Corps, which provides networking and other beneficial international help to all its consular members in the Los Angeles area.

A wonderful event, with a local mariachi band, and Consul Generals from New Zealand, Brazil, Ireland, and Kenya, to name just a few, the crowd was lively, and everyone danced.
Recognized as one of the two Platinum Sponsors of the event, Drs. Chen, John Teng, Sunny & Jonathan Beutler, and some of our great Sunrider attorneys enjoyed the food and the wide array of people in attendance from all over the world. Everyone in attendance received a gift bag with a beautiful, new Sunrider advertisement and a box of Fortune Delight.

During the ball, there was a lottery, which had the grand prizes of free roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere in the world in first class, business class, and economy class. Although none of the Sunriders won these grand prizes, our very own Paul McCabe won 2 tickets for an 8-day, first-class train tour of Switzerland. He and his wife will definitely go on a long vacation very soon.
It was definitely an evening to remember.

Torrance Chinese School Gala

On Saturday, November 10, Sunrider participated in the second annual Torrance Chinese School fundraiser dinner as one of its main corporate sponsors. In attendance were the California State Controller, John Chiang, the Torrance Unified School District Superintendent, Dr. George Mannon, and other school officials. The event was catered at a Chinese restaurant in Torrance, and we all ate our fill. It was a great event for Sunrider to sponsor to help maintain the Chinese language and culture among second-generation immigrants who may not otherwise have a chance to learn their heritage. Thanks to the dedication of both the Taiwanese and Chinese teachers, the volunteer teacher's aids, and the fundraising efforts of many there, Torrance Chinese School is the largest in the South Bay.

At the lottery held after the dinner, many hand-crafted and donated gifts were given away. Sunny & Jonathan Beutler even won a digital camera, which they plan on giving to a friend in Brazil.

As always, Sunrider was happy that it could give back to the community in some small way.

Turkey Trot Fun Run

2007-11-30 17:18

Sunrider International

I volunteered to get up at the crack of dawn on Thanksgiving morning to set up a Sunrider convention booth in support of the 28th annual City of Torrance Turkey Trot. Sunrider was one of the proud sponsors of this meaningful local event and I really wanted to personally be there to participate and to introduce Sunrider to the neighboring communities that surround the corporate headquarters. One of the Sunrider attorneys graciously agreed to join me in the morning to unload boxes, set up the booth, and to help me socialize with interested visitors.

The run also featured a food drive that collected thousands of canned food items from the participants to distribute to people in need throughout the South Bay. The proceeds from the Turkey Trot were then used to offset the costs of running "After School Club Programs" at fourteen local schools. These programs provide quality activities and care for Torrance youth. Several other Sunrider staff members specifically at the event to run in the race also dropped by afterwards to offer a helping hand as needed.

Curious visitors came by the Sunrider booth before and after the run and received a Simply the Best™ Brochure along with a beautiful Sunrider logo bag. Everyone interested in learning more about Sunrider's "franchise-like" business opportunity and the vast array of "Simply the Best™" products were given the contact information to Sunrider's corporate headquarters to drop by for an eye-opening and awe-inspiring visit!

Sunrider Cares about the Environment

2007-11-29 22:53

Sunrider International

We recently received an anonymous comment asking about the environmental status of our new Los Angeles manufacturing facilities. Because this is such an important topic we want to share our thoughts about it for this week's post.

Sunrider is deeply committed to protecting our fragile environment. In addition to many of our products being designed to combat the effects of an increasingly polluted world, our nearly completed Los Angeles buildings will incorporate many environmental elements, including important energy conservation and efficient design factors. For example, there is an extensive use of skylights in these large buildings, which provide beneficial natural daylight, as well as occupancy sensors (motion detectors), lighting timers, photocells for outdoor nighttime lighting and other light-saving designs, all of which conserve energy and benefit the environment.

Sunrider is also proud of the following further environmental actions that we're taking to improve our buildings and processes:

• Steam is circulated through cooling towers that cool the water, allowing us to recycle it and assure that no impurities are released into the atmosphere.

• Insulation is used extensively throughout the building and highly efficient equipment, including those with variable frequency drives, is used to reduce energy consumption.

• Existing equipment from the City of Industry plants is being reused where practicable in our new facilities, thus saving energy associated with manufacturing and transporting new equipment.

• New pre-heaters for our large boilers were purchased which saves natural gas and new energy recovery systems are used to conserve energy.

• All air conditioning systems have been designed for air or water side economizers (free cooling) to save energy.

• Motion sensors will be used in the restrooms to conserve water.

• Only food-grade biodegradable lubricants and paints are used to keep our machines running.

While this is only a partial summary of our environmental actions, Sunrider will continue to pursue environmental elements and energy conservation in its operations and appreciates your interest in this and support. Thanks.

New Distributor Training Program a Big Hit!

2007-11-08 23:30

Sunrider International

The New Distributor Training Program held at Sunrider's Corporate Headquarters in Torrance, California on Thursday, October 18th was a real hit! As far as I can tell this meeting marked the first meeting dedicated exclusively to "brand new" Sunriders. The meeting covered goal setting, Dr. Chen's new "How to Approach" script, role playing an approach using Sun Breeze® Oil, an Opportunity Meeting overview, answering Frequently Asked Questions, a website presentation, leadership, and recognition. We really packed a lot of information into this meeting! The best part of the evening for me was the recognition portion where we celebrated all of the rank advancements achieved in such a short period of time. Eight new Sunriders were recognized for achieving the rank of Associate Director within their first 2 months in the company—some within their very first month! Sunny Beutler asked each of the eight new Associate Directors onto the stage one at a time to tell the audience how long they had been in Sunrider. Sunny then asked each person for their permission to tell the audience how much money each of them had earned since they joined Sunrider. It was funny how some of them didn't realize how much money they had made in a very short time frame. One Sunrider didn't even start building his business until this September and has already sponsored 10 people and earned over $2,000 dollars!* All in all I think the overwhelming impression of every new Sunrider in attendance was the feeling of sincerity and commitment from Sunrider founders Dr. and Mrs. Chen and the entire corporate headquarters to help them get up to speed as quickly as possible as future business builders.

The training meeting was quickly followed up by an opportunity meeting on Tuesday, October 30th here at the Sunrider headquarters to support the guests of our new Distributors. 38 people attended this opportunity meeting and from the expressions on the audience's faces afterwards it looked like everybody had a great time! The event was a real multicultural experience with representation from Mexico, Vietnam, Israel, Polynesia, and the United States. With so many different cultures meeting together for a common purpose, I was reminded that Sunrider International spans across the globe and everyone who joins us becomes part of a larger international family! I shared the 6-point multimillion dollar business opportunity and I emphasized Sunrider's ability to help every person earn $10,000 per month and even $100,000 per month if they set the goal to do so*. This is achievable for them because it is already happening to many Sunriders around the world. A few powerful demonstrations from the Starter Pack I and three success stories from our fellow Sunriders and the event couldn't have been much better! Everybody left with several handouts to review afterwards: a Switch the Brands handout, a conference call and meeting schedule with dial-in instructions, and a Simply the Best™ brochure.

Sunrider is really serious about giving each and every Sunrider all of the simple and easy tools they need to reach their dreams and goals with us. These are the types of meaningful and exciting meetings that I am hoping we can take on the road to locations all over North America or maybe even broadcast them via video stream on the Sunrider website. What do you think about that!!!

Sunrider Supports AIDS Walk Los Angeles

2007-10-24 17:18

Sunrider International

Sunrider had the privilege of being the sole sponsor of the AIDS Walk Los Angeles Awards Tent on 21 Oct. 2007. As part of its sponsorship, Sunrider donated $10,000 to AIDS Walk Los Angeles that will benefit AIDS Project Los Angeles, one of the largest non-profit AIDS service organizations in the U.S. Sunrider also donated 3,000 sample tubes of Oi-Lin® Hand & Body Lotion Sunscreen SPF 25, which was handed out by volunteers to all the walkers who came to the Awards Tent. This was the first time Sunrider has participated in AIDS Walk, and we are happy that we could help bring more awareness, education, and help in preventing the spread of this life-threatening disease.

Before the AIDS Walk began, we were invited to a VIP Breakfast with the other event sponsors and a host of television and musical celebrities. At the VIP Breakfast representing Sunrider were David & Kay Heap, Jose Flores, Pauline Vo, Regional Manager Ras Jeyakumar, my husband Jonathan and myself, and our cousin Jamee. Although the breakfast started very early in the morning, it was great to see everyone there in support of eradicating AIDS.

We also had the opportunity to speak to our sales leaders about the importance of Dr. Chen's new script on How to Approach, which is a necessity for every new and old business builder. In it, Dr. Chen provides an easy to follow script of exactly what you should say when approaching both new and familiar prospects. The number one principle: Let them know how much money they can potentially make!!! Everyone should memorize this script, role play it, and use it to introduce Sunrider and answer Frequently Asked Questions. If you'd like a copy, just call/email and let us know.

After the breakfast, we were guided to a VIP section adjacent to the Opening Ceremony stage. Celebrities like Faith Ford from the TV series "Murphy Brown" and now "Hope & Faith," Ana Ortiz from "Ugly Betty," and Shirley Jones (aka Mrs. Partridge from "The Partridge Family") were there to name a few.

To see more about AIDS Walk Los Angeles, go to
http://www.aidswalk.net/losangeles/ .
It was a great and exciting event for the tens of thousands of people who were there.

WELCOME TO SUNRIDER'S OFFICIAL BLOG!

2007-10-15 23:50

Sunrider International

Welcome to our new Sunrider blog! I'm happy to be the first guest blogger and share more about Sunrider. We hope our blog will give you a "behind-the-scenes" look at the company and include other guest bloggers from the corporate office.

New Business Leader Training Meeting

A little over a week ago, we had our first "New Business Leader Training Meeting." My parents, Sunrider owners Dr. Tei-Fu Chen and Dr. Oi-Lin Chen, specially invited a select group of 21 new Business Leaders and their sponsors for a 2-day training seminar. I wasn't able to attend all of the meetings, but what I did see and hear was exciting!

On the first day (September 26th), we visited the new LA Manufacturing Plants. I haven't been inside for over a year and I was awestruck at the size, scope, and complexity of the facilities. I know how big it is (almost 900,000 square feet) and I've heard my parents talk a lot about it, but WOW, seeing it for myself was absolutely thrilling. It just further validated what I and our Distributors already know—that my parents' commitment and investment to create the finest products is bar none. It's mind-boggling to comprehend the enormity of this project. I think our new Business Leaders were also amazed and proud to be part of this. Of course, there is still work to do and machinery to move. I can't wait to see it completed in the beginning of 2008. You can be sure I'll showcase it all over our website!

Over the next two days, my parents and Don Caster, a Silver Master Director, coached the new Business Leaders on how to approach, how to answer frequently asked questions, and how to be a leader. During the training, I could tell the new Business Leaders' eyes were opened to the true potential of their business. Obviously, they are all hard workers and have goals for their business; otherwise, my parents wouldn't have invited them. But, I think the whole experience boosted their confidence that Sunrider really can help them fulfill their goals and that they should dream even bigger. They realized Sunrider is not just about great products and by-the-way you can make some extra money, but Sunrider is the way for them to own a huge, profitable business AND enjoy our products AND help other people at the same time. I can't think of a business that's more mutually beneficial than this.

Before the Business Leaders left, my parents gave them a few special "treats" to take home— products that are still in development such as the new brightening serum and new Oi-Lin® Skin Care Trial Set. I also gave them a sneak peak at our new website design and replicator website. Yes, we are revamping everything!

I had a great time meeting the new Business Leaders and feeling their energy. It renewed and strengthened my own motivation to help them succeed. Anabelle also enjoyed meeting them (especially one little boy) and helping my father with his presentation. We're planning on holding these special meetings twice a year. Hopefully, some of you who are reading this blog will qualify the next time and we can "wine and dine" you.

New Distributor Training Meeting

We're having a New Distributor Training Meeting at the Torrance Headquarters on October 18th from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm. It's for New Distributors only (no guests). You can find out more here. My sister, Sunny, my husband, John, and I will be conducting the meeting. It will be a lot of fun and very informative!
